THE OTHER SIDE

Out on the other side
I rubbed my eyes to find them
All my forgotten time rushed
Like a flood into my mind

I didn’t recognize
The hills and the glowing lights
Something had shifted
And my whole world looked like strangers to my eyes
Like it was the first time I’d seen it in the light

So clear
Like I’ve never seen

After I slept a while, I
Turned my eyes to find you
Have you always glowed so bright?
I felt your spell across the room

It wasn’t the winter light
I’ve seen that a million times
Something had lifted
And the whole world looked so dim next to your eyes
Like it was the the first I’d seen you in my life

And I dropped dead
And rose again
And when I tried to speak
I just started breathing
Breathing deep

NEXT TO YOU

You’re in the edges of the afternoon
The silent river in between my eyes and you
And I am pushing on it
Hovering just under the atmosphere

Save me a sunny space
I’m swimming in

It breathes around me
And I never knew
Until I found my body
Next to you

I start to wander through the open doors
The crowded room becomes a redwood forest floor
I forget I’m tall
I forget that they can see me at all
Until I see my body
Next to you

The fog is lifting, sifting through the ancient trees
The sea is drifting, swaying gently north to west to east
And as it leans a little to our side
It crashes and powers through stone
Chiseling at the landscape tirelessly, endlessly
Shifting everything we know

I start forgetting that the air’s a thing
A crowd between us making oceans I’ve never seen
And I am pushing on ‘em
With every stretch of my property
Until I rest my body
Next to you

CONTINENTAL DRIFT

Been waking up every day
A travel-weary soul
Having wandered in place
Through epics of my own

And in the memories I thought up
I saw that I would start to follow
When I got closer you got taller
I only wanted to be by your side for a while

At the lowest tide
The sea goes quiet
At the lowest tide
The sea goes quiet

I tried to draft in the wake
Of your continental drift
Thought if I shadowed your shape
That you might let me in

And then my spark slipped away
Somewhere in the sand
On someone else’s birthday
The waves so deafening

Lets just pretend it never happened
Go find a canyon to cool down in
I know we’re only our reactions
But I’m gonna need you to be eye to eye for a while

Cause at the lowest tide
The sea goes quiet
I’m at my lowest now
Can you walk me down

CRUSADERS

Still, as sun in a silver flake
In a frame
In a frame
Holding all that we've felt
To long winter shadows of ourselves

I was told I should dress this way
And what else?
And what else?
Just waving our flags
Crusaders but strangers to ourselves

Aren’t there lands in our bodies?
Aren’t there waves in the sea?
Was there really a moment you came to be?
Hmm?

Hold, hold it up
It’s not too late
It’s not too much
Dig for the wishes that you made
They’re still awake
These will just become somebody else’s simpler days
It’s never easy
You’re as free as you’ll let yourself become

DOMESTICATED FIRE

Domesticated fire
Domesticated stone
Domesticated wild places
I’ll never be alone

They’ve stolen up our patience
Domesticated time
My body takes a beating
To satisfy my mind
To taste
To take me away

With so much coming at me
I can’t believe my eyes
I wanted prophecy and then ecstasy
But now the clarity is sublime

YOU ARE HERE

Pale as the predawn blue
Spare as the morning dew
Veiled, your forgotten wounds
They are calling to you

Prayer is a plea to choose
Character a thief of truth
There’s nothing here that’s new
Only knots passed along to you

Buried in covers, quiet
Flaring between the blinds
They’ll only breathe and untie
As soon as you greet them kindly

Stop asking why
Stop wondering if
There is nothing new
Only knots being tied and untied again
The stories can be thieves
Greet them warmly
But don’t linger
Drink from the river

You are here
You are here
You are here
You are here
